Ahmad Karmouni

Ahmad Karmouni is a visual artist born in 1994 in Assilah, Morocco. He graduated from the National Institute of Fine Arts in Tétouan in 2019 and currently lives and works between Morocco and France. Karmouni develops a practice that seeks analogies between raw material and the realm of the sensitive and immaterial.

Through constant observation and experimentation, he explores the interactions between matter, time, ritual, and affect, aiming to reveal new plastic (artistic) potentialities.

His field of experimentation spans several media, including installation, drawing, and printmaking techniques, with particular attention to collaborative processes and co-creation. In 2020, Karmouni co-founded محاولات – Mouhawalat (“Attempts” in Classical Arabic), an artists’ collective that seeks to imagine alternative forms of creation and transmission based on trial and continuous experimentation.

Within this framework, he created الجاذبية – Al-Jadibiya (“Gravity” in Arabic), a project in which he questions the invisible gravitational force of decorative objects found in traditional Moroccan living rooms. He perceives these objects as material manifestations of a diffuse yet deeply influential familial energy, creating a tension between the intimate sphere and the family script.

In a more intimate approach, Karmouni initiated the project لامبوت – Lambout – Collection of Tears, in which he attempts to capture fleeting emotional moments by collecting tears preserved in small vials. He observes their slow crystallization, thus forming a sensitive and collective archive.

His practice therefore focuses on objects, their ritual uses, and the cultural codes to which they are connected, as well as on matter and its symbolic and aesthetic dimensions.

He has participated in various residencies and exhibitions, including La Condition Publique (France), Artagon (France), A4 Residency Art Center (Switzerland), Palais de Tokyo (France), Fræme (France), Triangle-Astérides (France), Fondation Fiminco (France), Mahal Art Space (Morocco), Caravane Tighmert (Morocco), MAC.A (Morocco), Jeune Création (France), Goethe Institute (Morocco), Tanger Print Club (Morocco), LE 18 Marrakech (Morocco), and GVCC (Morocco).
