Fernando Baena
Fernando Baena’s work is interdisciplinary, depending on the project.
He recently returned to painting, the medium he began with; the resulting painting installations were shown at ARCO art fair (Madrid) and Palacio de Quintanar (Segovia).
Fernando Baena has led collaborative projects including the group LaHostiaFineArts parmis lesquels les projets Dentro-Fuera, Escuela de Tauromaquia, Historias de Madrid and Asnología.
Since the 90s, Baena has created site-specific installations at venues including the Círculo de Bellas Artes (Madrid), Palacio de la Diputación de Córdoba, O Castelinho (Rio de Janeiro), Bambu Courtain Studio (Taipei), Overgaden (Copenhagen), or A Caixa (Brasilia).
Beginning in 2000, Baena’s video work has been shown at festivals including Proyector (Madrid), DIVA (New York), Óptica (Gijón), LOOP (Barcelona) and Transperformance (Rio de Janeiro), independent venues and galleries such as Magda Bellotti or OTR, and art centers including La Casa Encendida (Madrid), Sala Puerta Nueva (Córdoba), CEDAN (Huesca), Fundación Granell (Santiago), MUCA Roma (México DF), CAC (La Habana), MOCA (Seul) and the Tjörnedala Art Centre (Simrishamn, Sweden).
Work in performance art includes participation in festivals such as Acción!MAD (Madrid), Bbeyond Performance Art (Belfast and Derry), La Muga Caula (Girona), Epipiderme (Lisbon), Abierto de Acción (Murcia), and solo events at galleries or institutional centers such as C3A, Centro de Cultura Contemporánea de Andalucía (Córdoba).
Public art events include Rehabi(li)tar Lavapiés (Madrid), Madrid Abierto, Aberto Brasilia (Brazil), El Patio de mi casa (Córdoba), or Intramurs (Valencia).
Baena holds a PhD in Fine Arts (University of Granada) and has engaged in curatorial, academic and research work in Europe and Latin America, including the creation and direction of FAAC 2015 (Festival de Arte de Acción de Cuenca, Ecuador), Archivo Ecuatoriano de Arte de Acción, public art and video sections of MAD.03, The 2nd meeting of experimental arts, and the CoMa exhibition series (Madrid – Copenhagen).
