Sérgio Leitão
With a Degree and PhD in Fine Arts from ESAP and the University of Vigo, along with participation in the Independent Visual Arts Program at Maumaus, and multidisciplinary programs at Städelschule, Hordaland Kunstsenter, Bioregion Institute, AR.CO (Sculpture/Photography), and the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation (Video Art), Sérgio Leitão’s work integrates avant-garde references and hybrid forms.
His artistic practice explores connections between nature and technique, weight and lightness, poetics and politics, and challenges the boundaries between natural and artificial. Through the use of archives, multimedia, and contextual installations, the artist creates spaces where reality and fiction merge, combining painting, sculpture, and video.
Leitão has presented his work in several institutions: BINZ39 Foundation (Zurich), Konstepidemin Art Center (Göteborg), Detroit (Stockholm), WEP Foundation (Groningen), West Cork Arts Center (Cork), Poush (Paris), Brno House of Arts (Brno), HIAP (Helsinki), Rupert (Vilnius), Viafarini (Milan), MACRO (Rome), Palazzo Bembo (Venice); Notgalerie (Vienna); Vasarely Museum (Budapest); Museum of Avant-Garde (Zagreb), etc.
Upcoming projects include presentations at P////AKT (Amsterdam), Cité internationale des arts (Paris), and Le Cube (Rabat).
He has received an international grant from the FCT (2009-2013) and a Shuttle grant for Gli Oratori – The Speakers (Venice, 2019).
His works are part of public and private collections, including VIAFARINI (Milan), MACRO, (Rome), and IZOLYATSIA (Kiev).
