Thiago Rocha Pitta
Thiago Rocha Pitta began his artistic career in the 2000s after studying art, philosophy, and aesthetics at UFRJ and EAV Parque Lage in Rio de Janeiro.
His work explores the intimate relationship he establishes with nature, which often becomes a co-author in his projects. Rocha Pitta is fascinated by subtle natural transformations, which he captures through various mediums, including videos, photography, watercolor, and fresco.
His melancholic or surreal video narratives emphasize the entropy of matter, while his paintings and outdoor installations often depict weather phenomena, such as fog, storms, or eclipses.
Time is another central element in his art, evident in works like his renowned water mirror/platform installation on a hill, inviting viewers to walk on reflections of the sky while facing the abyss below.
The installation inspires the project “A Fundação Abismo” (The Abyss Foundation), located in the middle of the Atlantic Forest, on the edge of the city of Petrópolis, where the artist now lives, maintains his studio, and implants works that interact with the landscape.
Rocha Pitta has exhibited internationally, with solo shows at venues like MAM Rio, Simões de Assis, São Paulo, and Marianne Boesky Gallery, New York.
His work has appeared in prestigious group exhibitions such as MoMA, New York; MASP, São Paulo; Palazzo Bollani, Venice; and the 30th São Paulo Biennial.
His art is part of major collections, including MoMA, Colección Jumex, and Inhotim.
