Tom Platzer
“As a photographer i have worked in the field of commercial photography with over 25 years of extensive advertising and portrait photographic experience.
During the mid 1980’s whilst in Monte Carlo, I had the fortune of working for some time with the great Helmut Newton as one of his assistants.
By 1988 I had become an accomplished professional photographer in Vienna, shooting celebrity photographs for the biggest Austrian and German weekly magazines.
During this time I also was one of the official photographers designated to photograph the Austrian Prime Minister in his world travels on an official capacity.
From 1992 to 2002 I had set up my own studio in the heart of Vienna, and also spent a lot of time traveling the world on photo shoots for major advertising agencies such as Lowe/GGK, Demner/ Merlicek, BBDO and also for well known Austrian companies such as Swarovski, Magna etc.
During this time I did a lot of portrait photography, photographing many famous people such as Karl Lagerfeld, Cindy Crawford, The Pope, Shirley McLaine, Luciano Benetton, The Dalai Lama, Royalty, Heads of State, and other luminaries from European and American society.
By 2004 I had also developed strong interest in photographic art and embarked on a new direction working on charity exhibitions in Austria, Morocco, and China, such as: Far From Heaven – Homeless People (Exhibited in Vienna, Casablanca and Rabat), Shadow in the Light – Sexually Abused Kids (Exhibited in Vienna), Connect – Group Public Installation Exhibition (Exhibited in Shanghai), New Horizons – Kids of Calcutta (Exhibited in Vienna and Graz)
Whilst living in Shanghai China, during June 2007 I worked together with 2 other artists on a Public Installation for the Xintiandi Art Festival in Shanghai China, which received excellent positive press reviews.
Also in 2007, as a result of interest in my work, I had my first book published illustrating my work in various areas of interest: Advertising, Charity Exhibits, People Portraiture including Celebrity Portrait Photography, and also Photographic Art.
In 2008 I further explored my interest in photographic art, and expanded my knowledge both creatively and technically by completing Master Fine Arts in Photography at RMIT University in Melbourne Australia. For my Masters thesis I pursued my passion in photographic art exploring such themes as “The Abstraction of Light”.
In 2009 I continued developing my photographic art, whilst still working commercially in Europe. I also traveled extensively through India with charity foundation, and fulfilled a very successful photographic exhibition in Vienna which highlighted the plight of kids in Calcutta. The exhibition titled New Horizons received excellent reviews and resulted in huge public interest through media and raised outstanding amount of funds for the children.
Due to huge success of my New Horizons kids of Calcutta exhibition, I was asked to re-exhibit these works in 2010. Again this exhibition was received extremely well.
In December 2011 I was invited to present: Tom Platzer – solo exhibition in my subject of passion “The Abstraction of Light”.”
