In 2025, Le Cube celebrates twenty years of commitment to contemporary art, supporting artists and promoting innovative expression.
Since its creation in 2005, so much has happened… This journey, punctuated by encounters, projects, exhibitions and residencies, reflects a collective adventure that continues to forge links between the Moroccan and international scenes.
A great opportunity to look back on twenty years marked by inventiveness, exchanges, human relationships and unforgettable moments.
2005: The beginnings with the collectif 212
The idea of creating a space dedicated to art grew out of my passion for contemporary art. It came to life with the founding of the collectif 212, a group of visionary artists: Amina Benbouchta, Hassan Echair, Safaa Erruas, Jamila Lamrani, Imad Mansour, Myriam Mihindou and Younes Rahmoun. Together, we imagined a space for exchange, experimentation and support for new forms of artistic expression.
From the very first exhibition in 2005, Le Cube affirmed its vocation by presenting emblematic works such as Les Oreillers by Safaa Erruas and Markib by Younes Rahmoun. These works, first shown at Le Cube, soon travelled and found an international following. This dynamic has continued with projects such as Frontières Fluides by Katrin Ströbel and Mohammed Laouli, UM d’Alina by Alva Duchrow and Ziad Naitaddi, and more recently, Trombia by Marion Mounic and Tired Palm Trees, produced in collaboration with curator Markus Waitschacher.
Residencies & other initiatives
One of Le Cube’s fundamental commitments is to support artists at the start of their careers. In 2011, we created the summers lab, a residency program designed to support young Moroccan artists. This project has enabled artists such as Mustapha Akrim, Mohamed Arejdal, Hanane El Farissi, Abdessamad El Montassir, Imane Djamil, Mouhcine Rahaoui, Yasmine Bendabdallah and many others to benefit from a framework to develop their practice, take advantage of a workspace and curatorial support, exchange with other artists and cultural players and share their research with a diverse audience.
Since 2007, Le Cube has been offering residencies, providing artists with a venue dedicated to experimentation and research. The program has welcomed artists from France, Mexico, the United States, Spain, Italy, Finland, Belgium, Austria, Germany, Switzerland, the Netherlands, Libya, Egypt and many other countries, fostering exchange and intercultural dialogue.
Always on the search for new ways to highlight contemporary art, in 2013 Le Cube launched the video nights, a program dedicated to video art. Moroccan artists such as Younes Baba-Ali and Simohammed Fettaka with their DVD project, Mohammed Laouli, Touda Bouanani, Yassine Balbzioui as well as international artists such as Anna Raimondo, Fatima Bianchi and many others presented their work and discussed with audiences as part of this program.
In the same year, Le Cube introduced the project curators zone, opening up new perspectives through collaborations with curators: Karima Boudou, Julie Crenn, Susana Moliner, Pascal Lièvre, Clélia Coussonnet, Bouchra Salih and many others have enriched this project with their meaningful contributions.
Le Cube expanded
In addition to being a physical venue, since 2021 Le Cube has embraced a new identity as a nomadic space: Le Cube expanded. Through its temporary presence in different locations, this itinerant concept strengthens links between artistic communities and enables Le Cube to reaffirm its commitment to contemporary art, in Morocco and beyond.
As part of this dynamic, we have established a number of collaborations with international art institutions, such as the Art Sonje Center in Seoul and Maxxi Rome in 2024, the Climate Cultures Festival Berlin in 2023, the Villa du Parc in Annemasse in 2022, and many more.
Moving forward together
Over the years, several collaborators have joined Le Cube, each contributing their expertise to enrich the artistic content and refine the vision of the project: Jamila Lamrani, Wafaa Mali, Gabrielle Camuset, Zineb Sbai El Idrissi, Clément Bernard, Josephine Dernoncourt, Nezha Rhondali, Achraf Remok, Yasmine Mechbal. Thanks to their commitment and innovative ideas, they have made a significant contribution to the evolution and dynamism of Le Cube.
20 years in numbers
Since its foundation, Le Cube has organized 111 exhibitions, 138 events and 70 artist residencies. Over 310 artists and artistic practitioners have taken part, and a network of more than 80 partner institutions has been developed.
A continuing adventure
These twenty years are as much a celebration as a starting point. In line with its mission, Le Cube remains a place for encounters, exchanges, research and creation. In this sense, we will continue to support artists, foster dialogue around contemporary art and build bridges between cultures.
To celebrate our anniversary, we’re planning an eventful year. A publication will look back on two decades of artistic work, and our archives will be opened to the public for a special three-day event, with screenings and meetings. Several artist residencies, an exhibition in Porto and a video screening in Madrid will also mark this year.
It’s time to express my deep gratitude to all the artists, cultural operators, collaborators and partner institutions who have believed in Le Cube’s vision and who continue to support our work with trust and commitment.
Shoukran – Merci – Thank you – Danke!
