Film Screening: Le Cadeau
A film by Myriam Van Imschoot
With the Brussels YouYou Group
Featuring portraits of/with:
Anissa Rouas, Fatiha El Mrabet, Malika Mderreg, Sarah Léo
Duration: 48 min | Color | French & Arabic
Subtitles: French

Le Cadeau (The Gift) is a medium-length film built around four portraits – Malika, Anissa, Fatiha, and Sarah. Through songs, demonstrations, and personal stories, they explore their relationship to their voice, particularly the youyou (or zaghareed in Arabic), a trilling vocal expression originating in Africa and the Middle East, traditionally used by women to express joy or other intense emotions.

At first, the portraits seem unconnected, but gradually threads emerge and weave a shared narrative. The film traces paths of migration and diaspora, lines of desire and resistance, and above all, solidarity. These elements converge until a collective cry resonates from the rooftops of Brussels – a poetic declaration.

Roundtable Discussion:
“How does personal history meet collective History? Diasporas, cultural circulation, and the memory of migration through the lens of artists”

Drawing on the themes explored in the film Le Cadeau and a selection of works from the exhibition Au-delà de toutes les mers, this discussion addresses cultural circulation in relation to diasporas. How can individual stories and personal trajectories help us understand broader movements of populations and the cultural exchanges they generate?
How do artists transform fragmentary – or absent – traces such as objects, landscapes, archives, or testimonies into sensitive, visible narratives, revealing the often-silent memory of migration?
