For this edition of the video night, Le Cube – independent art room is delighted to welcome young filmmaker Zineb Wakrim, who will present her award-winning film AYYUR (Moon) and be available for a discussion with the audience after the screening.
With her short film AYYUR, Zineb Wakrim encourages an eye that finds beauty in what might otherwise be considered strange. Her protagonists are 14-year-old Hasna and Samad, for whom art and painting are a means of resisting and catching the light in the midst of darkness. They are playful painters inside their home, but alien beings outside wearing astronaut helmets protecting them from the sun, as if they were aliens on their own planet.
Contrasting a black-and-white exterior landscape with luminous interior walls lined with artworks, Zineb Wakrim uses natural metaphors – the moon in particular – in this exploration of the search for light in the dark.
AYYUR was selected in the official CINEF competition 2023 at the 76th Cannes Film Festival and won third prize. The film was honored by jury president Ildikó Enyedi “for its originality and incisiveness“, and toured several festivals after its Cannes premiere. It was screened at the Pantheon cinema in Paris in June, at the MUCEM in Marseille at COPEAM, at the SARAJEVO FILM FESTIVAL in Bosnia-Herzegovina, received a special mention JEUNE PUBLIQUE in Montpellier and shone at MEDFILM ROME in Italy, occupying the major Italian platforms (MyMovies. it).
AYYUR enabled Zineb WAKRIM to be selected as one of the 30 UNDER 30 at FORBES MIDDLE EAST 2023 in the USA.
