On the occasion of the summer’s lab, Le Cube – independent art room is pleased to invite Yasmine Benabdallah for a research residency.
The artist will take advantage of her stay to make the project Chebba, a hybrid film about the ritual of purification of the evil eye, as practiced by four generations of women from the same Moroccan family.
Amidst the incense and protective psalms, the beliefs of each woman manifest themselves, both in contradiction and in harmony.
“Chebba is a film that is as political as it is personal, inspired by the intergenerational dynamics of my own family’s background of illiteracy, religion, rationalization and care. Through prayers, intimate laughter and bittersweet sighs, each character’s beliefs, life path and place in the family are revealed, telling their relationship to the history of Morocco.”
