The new project “Hey Mama!”, in collaboration with Le Cube – independent art room as part of an off-site residency, is a contemporary exploration of motherhood, both a question and a quest led by Yasmine Hatimi, a 36-year-old photographer who, through her lens, examines a fundamental aspect of femininity. She is committed to understanding the constructs, mechanisms, metamorphoses and perceptions inherent in motherhood.
Yasmine Hatimi aspires to meet with mothers, non-mothers, mothers-to-be, women with no desire for children, in order to explore the fascinating and puzzling subject of motherhood. By doing so, she hopes to shed light on her own desire or lack of desire for motherhood.
Today’s society seems to have a skewed relationship with pregnancy, birth and motherhood, often idealized, watered-down, embellished, or sometimes obscured, invisibilized, even taboo. By exploring the intimacy of these women and obtaining sincere, authentic portraits, Yasmine Hatimi seeks to address these social constructs and representations.
With “Hey Mama!”, the artist aims to achieve a form of authenticity around motherhood. The project aims to demystify motherhood, exploring its various facets and the emotions associated with it (desire, instinct, doubt, fear, joy, rejection, regret, indifference) without judgment. She wishes to allow herself an ‘uncomfortable’ treatment of this issue, and create a work that is both intimate and political, addressing the female condition.
